Back in the 90’s the Mars (“The Musician’s Planet!”) store in Tampa was having a Going Out of Business sale. They had a floor model of a certain single pickup signature guitar that I really wanted. It was going for about what I’m charging for these. I was too broke at the time to pick it up and before long that model was out of production. I always regretted not buying it at the time. I really liked the guitar and I especially liked that it was a signature model that didn’t really look like the artist’s stage guitar. It captured the spirit of his guitar, but it wasn’t like buying a guitar that you couldn’t play without looking like you should be in a tribute band.
The used market for that model was beyond what I wanted to pay and over the years I kept hoping the company would reissue it, but instead they eventually came out with a relic’d copy of the artist’s stage guitar for about the price of a new economy car. Then another company came out with their version of the two-pickup version, but I really have a thing for the single-pickup version. So eventually I decided that Fool needed to tackle the problem with our own version of that guitar. Here it is. The Fool Malcontent.
I've added locking tuners, because I really find that very convenient, but otherwise it's a very simple rock and roll machine. The Volume control is up near the neck. The Tone control is down near the output jack. The body and neck are mahogany. The fretboard is rosewood. The top is flamed maple. The single pickup is a Filtertron-style humbucker. These are chambered, much like the original.
I do these instruments as a platform for upgrades. They're inexpensive and sound fine in their stock configuration, but one of the reasons I started Fool was to build inexpensive instruments that I wouldn't be afraid to mod and use for experiments. I was eager to put a TV Jones Power'Tron Plus in the prototype and see how it behaved and wasn't disappointed. If you have pickups or hardware you'd like to try out in your Malcontent, I will always be happy to install them with no charge for labor before your instrument ships.
So that's all there is to it! You probably already know if this is something you want to own. Hopefully you're just as excited about this project as I am.
